People & Lifestyle

Like most rural settings, Carlisle has a much slower, relaxed pace of life than can be found in the city.  Locals enjoy picturesque views of the landscape year-round. In the summer, the rich shades from the sky, bright green leaves, and local plant life are something beautiful to behold. Even when snow blankets the ground in winter, there’s an enviable quiet and stillness in the air.

The community can best be described as friendly, small, and focused on conservation. Those who live in Carlisle enjoy spending time outdoors and seek to preserve the land for generations to come. Conservation is at the core of everything that happens here, and it’s an important component of the strong values you’ll encounter in the area.

Dining, Shopping & Entertainment

Because it is located in the country, Carlisle doesn’t possess an overwhelming number of stores, entertainment venues, or restaurants. However, there are plenty of quality places to frequent when you live in town.

Along (and just off of) Bedford Road, you’ll find most of the area’s shopping establishments. Depending on the season, you can pick up your fresh produce at Clark Farm Market. When you’re looking for the perfect, one-of-a-kind gift — or an exquisite piece of decor for your home — stop by Carlisle Artisans Gallery. Other favorite local stores include Ferns Country Store, Initial Stitch, and Complete Equestrian Saddlery.

Inside the town limits, enjoy your favorite ice cream flavors at the Kimball Farm ice cream stand. If you’re looking for a full meal, a quick drive to nearby North Billerica will give you several options. The first is Zesty’s Pizza Family Restaurant, where you can dine on delicious pizza, pasta, calzones, and more. For breakfast, don’t miss the waterfront dining experience at Riverview Restaurant.

Things to Do

With its idyllic countryside setting, Carlisle is the perfect place to get outdoors and enjoy nature. Even after you’ve lived here for several years, it will always seem like there’s something new to do, see, and explore.

One of the most notable spots in Carlisle is Great Brook Farm State Park. The history of this 1000-acre dog-friendly park dates all the way back to the 17th century. Throughout the year, you can take part in all kinds of outdoor recreation, including cross-country skiing, hiking (on 20+ miles of trails), horseback riding, biking, mountain biking, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, and more. There are also routinely held educational programs, a boat ramp, grills, and a visitors center.

In addition to the state park, there are many other nature sites in Carlisle. Around the area, you can plan a morning or afternoon at places such as Malcolm Preserve, Towle Land, Town Forest Carlisle, Greenough Land, and Cranberry Bog.
